Digital Marketing Education in Iowa Goes Through DMACC

Since it launched in the Fall 2015 semester, the DMACC Digital Marketing Certificate has offered specialized educational opportunities for students with diverse goals. This niche program appeals to Marketing students looking to add specialization, as well as to students in other program areas looking to expand career options. It has also attracted working professionals who want to enhance their value for employers or clients. Perhaps most interestingly, the certificate has been attractive to four-year university grads previously unable to gain a Digital Marketing education elsewhere.

With the first crop of grads just entering the workforce in the last year, it is clear that there are tremendous career options in Des Moines and beyond for those who complete the program. The following is a look at some of the top digital marketing success stories, including the thoughts of alumni on how the certificate helped prepare them for a digital marketing role!

Maleah Hanken

Maleah HankenDigital Account Manager at Converge Consulting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Job Role: “In my role as a Digital Account Manager I help client’s develop their digital strategy by offering innovation solutions and insight into what online platforms work best for their brand. I work in a marketing agency focused on higher education and I love being able to help client’s grow their brand and increase their online presence so prospective students are able to find the college/university that’s the perfect fit for them. I enjoy building a trusting relationship with client’s and implementing new ideas to grow their strategy in the most effective ways.”

DMACC Experience: “The Digital Marketing certificate program at DMACC helped me gain the skills necessary to be successful in the digital marketing industry. I learned a wide range of digital strategy tactics including content development, brand strategy, SEO, data analysis, graphic design, social media marketing and HTML/CSS. I applied my new skills to projects directly – which included setting up my own blog, writing content, gathering data, and analyzing traffic to identify trends. I was also able to utilize my skills by developing a marketing strategy for a local Des Moines winery, which was a great project! I truly enjoyed the Digital Marketing Certificate program at DMACC because it taught me the skills I would need to be successful in the digital marketing industry.”

Erin Lamb

Erin Mueller of WebspecDigital Marketing Coordinator at Webspec Design in Urbandale, Iowa.

Job Role: “I love that my role allows me to learn new things daily. The world of digital marketing is constantly changing and I bore easily, so it’s pretty perfect for me. I like that in one day, I could be analyzing a keyword report, brainstorming on a better social media strategy, writing a technical blog, and playing with dogs (we have office pups).”

DMACC Experience: “Whenever anyone asks what my favorite part of attending DMACC was, I tell them it was the instructors and the discussions in each class. I never felt like just a number, so it was easy to approach a teacher with a question and raise my hand to join in a debate. Because marketing is always changing, getting comfortable in discussing trends and ideas with others (especially those with differing views) helped me to hit the ground running when I began my career.”

Tomas Read

Tomas Read of JB AutosportsYoutuber/Videographer/Social Media Manager at JB Autosports and Owner/Operater of TRmedium.

Job Role: “The thing I love most about my role is the creative freedom I have with each project. There are usually no directions or set protocols because new content trends and formats are always changing. It keeps things challenging but each day is never the same.”

DMACC Experience: “The first thing that comes to mind (about my DMACC Digital Marketing experience) is remembering some vocabulary words that really pulled me through my first phone call with a media company overseas… what I’ve learned about traditional advertising and marketing, and developing a mindset to stay relevant with the constantly changing platforms, has really made a difference in growth I’ve had with my job.”

Libby Roberts

Libby Roberts of MoultonDigital Marketing Specialist at Moulton & Associates Realtors.

Job Role: “I love how this career changes all the time. There is always something new to learn! It is also fun to find different ways to find success.”

DMACC Experience: “This certificate showed me my passion. I went from being a teen who spent all her free time playing on social media to actually turning it into a career. The instructors were amazing and always tried to relate topics to all the different students in the class. If you work hard, the instructors will do everything in their power to help create opportunities for the students.”
